Monica Helms is a painter and illustrator whose work frequently pairs depictions of native wildlife with native plants. She specifically paints the flora and fauna of Central Oregon. Helms describes her work as being a celebration of the region's natural splendor and a means to encourage it's residents to explore the diverse and spectacular environment in which they live. In her painting Sierra Nevada Red Fox and Giant Red Indian Paintbrush she combines a subspecies of red fox ( a rare native fox that lives in the Sierra Nevada, Southern Cascade Mountains and East Cascades) with a plant that also grows in the region.
Helms paints plants and creatures that one might encounter when venturing into the Central Oregon landscape. She hopes that he depiction of the beauty of nature will encourage us to become interested and involved in habitat conservation.
